DR Congo marked a significant milestone in their football history after securing a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their opening Group K match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The result delivered the nation’s first point on football’s biggest stage and ranks among the most memorable performances in Congolese football.
Facing a Portuguese side packed with world-class talent, DR Congo displayed determination and tactical discipline to withstand sustained pressure and emerge with a deserved share of the points.
The European side wasted little time asserting itself. Within five minutes, Joao Neves gave Portugal the advantage after meeting Pedro Neto’s delivery with a well-placed header.
